The 2011 Phoenix Comicon took place over the weekend at the Phoenix Convention Center. The event included many geek and pop culture stars such as George Takei, Leonard Nimoy, Vic Mignogna, and many others.

Among the many different anime, geek, comic, sci-fi and steam punk-themed festivities, there were also numerous video game tournaments and panels to be had at the convention. The Pause Button’s own IncreaseBlue attended and covered the event, she offers her thoughts on the event below.

The upcoming Phoenix Comicon set for Memorial Day weekend is undoubtedly packed with hundreds of hours of programming for every geek interest, but there’s also a good handful of events for gamers as well. Developers Team Up With Sony To Welcome Back Users

As most gamers already know, the recently cyber-attacked Playstation Network service went live once again late on May 14. Now the company fully detailed their “Welcome Back” package on Monday for loyal North American Playstation customers whose information was compromised (among many others) in the hacking incident.


The company has guaranteed non-Playstation Plus members a free month of the top tier service and two months to existing members prior to the network shut down.

Fatality! Dual Mortal Kombat Tournaments in AZ This Weekend

Marvel vs. Capcom 3 may be all the rage right now, but nothing quite captures the excitement of pummeling your enemy senselessly, then performing a bloody finisher with the words ‘Flawless Victory’ popping up.

This weekend there are two tournaments for the recently released Mortal Kombat (MK9 for those of you counting), both on Saturday.

Insight: The Importance of a Gamer Handshake

With more tournaments on the horizon, The Pause Button’s own IncreaseBlue has a few words to her fellow gamers as they enter into different competitions. She offers her thoughts below:

IncreaseBlue-

As tournament season is starting to get into full swing I’ve noticed a rather troubling trend. With more and more harrowing matches between extremely skilled AZ players, no one is shaking hands after the match.

This seems trivial and merely a measure of politeness, but it means much more than that. A handshake in and of itself signifies a feeling of mutual respect between two people, and in video game tournaments (as well as any kind of competition) it means even more. Read the rest of this entry »
