Grab your spyglasses, the Code Hunt is on!

Interactive marketing campaigns are nothing new to the video game industry when an upcoming game needs some pre-launch advertisement. (Heavy Rain had the Four Days Challenge and MLB 2K10 had the had the recently concluded 2K Sports Challenge.) Not to be outdone in this endeavor of course, is Konami’s take on interactive marketing with their latest Metal Gear Solid title: Peace Walker.

Konami launched the interactive campaign on Wednesday, entitled the “MGS: Peace Walker Code Hunt.”

The campaign consists of gamers creating a team or playing it solo, in a massive internet scavenger hunt for Peace Walker codes. What the codes do, is when inputted into the MGS PW Code Hunter site, adds to the player’s profile score and ranks them against other players or teams.

Once the Code Hunt is declared over, the top three players or teams will receive prizes. Third place wins $500 worth in gift cards (to what or where exactly is unknown at this time), second place wins an MGS Peace Walker “Big Boss” PSP Bundle, and first place will get the crowning prize of $10,000.

The real challenge lies in just finding the codes in the first place. Konami has made it easier on some by posting codes on their Twitter and Facebook pages however, the MGS PW site rules points to codes being hidden in affiliate websites or locations of “Konami allies.” Whether or not this points to the affiliations the game may have between GameStop or other video game retailers is something currently pondered by participants in the code hunt.

The site also supplies a “hint” in the form of a massive list of latitudes and longitudes of certain locations across America. Some code hunters have speculated that these coordinates effectively point in the directions of local Best Buy stores, but this has yet to be confirmed.

The MGS PW Code Hunt will last until June 2nd, when the winners of the above mentioned prizes will be announced. So if you haven’t jumped in on this code scavenger hunt of massive proportions, there’s still time. Here’s a code to get you started: MGS-PW-84b2d-2db48ff.

Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is slated to release on June 8th in the United States, June 17th in Europe, and June 18th in the UK.
