The upcoming Phoenix Comicon set for Memorial Day weekend is undoubtedly packed with hundreds of hours of programming for every geek interest, but there’s also a good handful of events for gamers as well. The Pause Button’s own IncreaseBlue has put together a small list of video game panels and events that caught her eye and are worth checking out over the weekend.
Phoenix Comicon is seriously stepping up their game (pun intended) this year, so this list is divided into video game events AND tournaments to check out this weekend.
A panel where all of your burning Resident Evil questions will be answered by the Alpha Team anime group. It’s unknown if they will be cosplaying as our beloved S.T.A.R.S. members, but if you’ve ever gotten into a full out argument over whether or not Wesker still lives or seek advice on surviving the next viral outbreak, who better to ask?
Achievement Unlocked: How to Gamerscore (Saturday 10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. Room 226B Anime)
Hosted by cosplay group Dollars, this panel isn’t about getting gold achievements in record time, but rather learning the subtle ways of dating a gamer properly. If nothing else, this is worth checking out for the Dollar group who came up with the clever panel title.
Upcoming PC and Video Games (Sunday 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Room 122 Sci-Fi)
Even though the title of this panel is bland, it could be pretty cool. Skewed n’ Reviewed creator and game/film critic Gareth Von Kallenbach talks about the latest games, often putting hype into perspective. Also there’s apparently video game swag involved so that’s always a bonus!
Anime From Video Games (Sunday 1:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Room 223 Anime)
Ever watch that rushed out Devil May Cry anime? Or how about that weird Final Fantasy Unlimited one? If you’ve ever tried to marry your interests in anime and video games only to see it fail, you are not alone. This panel focuses on all the terrible videogame-to-anime cash-ins with a few gems sparkling from underneath the junk.
That’s right, there’s video game concerts at Phoenix Comicon. How cool is that? There will be two concerts on Saturday at the adjoining convention Hyatt hotel in their 1st floor Regency Ballroom. First is a concert by Mega Ran, the 8-bit hip-hopper licensed by Capcom and exhibiting “nerd core” music at its best; this will start at 4 p.m. and end at 5 p.m.
Immediately following Mega Ran will be Minibosses, the band made famous from their musical appreciation for famous Nintendo titles such as Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, and Mega Man. Their concert will be in the ballroom as well and will begin at 5 p.m., ending at 6 p.m.
