The next title in the popular Call of Duty series of military first-person shooter games, Call of Duty: Black Ops, is set to be released on November 9. Several local Play N Trade stores are planning November 8 tournaments for Arizona players to get in some friendly competition and win prizes to celebrate the games’ midnight launch.
Modern Warfare 2 tournaments
The Phoenix Play N Trade located at 4727 East Bell Rd. is planning to host a Modern Warfare 2 tournament prior to the Black Ops release. The tournament will begin at 8 p.m. on November 8 and will feature four-man free-for-all game play with default classes. Play N Trade gift cards of $100, $50, and $25 will be awarded to the first, second, and third place competitors respectively. The entry fee is free to any competitor that pre-ordered Black Ops, but for those who did not pre-order, it will be a $10 fee.
Employees at the Avondale Play N Trade located at 1729 N. Dysart Rd. commented that there were loose plans for a tournament similar to the one being hosted at the Phoenix store for a $5 entry fee, but is dependant on how many entrants sign up for it beforehand. The prizes would also be reportedly determined by the amount of competitors, as well as start times.
Black Ops tournaments
Both the Phoenix West Play N Trade located at 3320 West Bethany Home Rd. and the 7th and Bell Play N Trade stores confirmed that they will be running midnight release tournaments utilizing Black Ops itself. Employees at both locations secured special permissions to open the games before the official release date for the purpose of the tournament only.
Both stores will run a four-man free-for-all tournament starting at 10 p.m. on November 8. It will cost $5 to enter and the winner will receive the first copy of Black Ops that night for free. It has yet to be determined if there will be runner-up prizes.
It has been confirmed with Play N Trade employees that all of the above mentioned tournaments will be run on Xbox 360 consoles.
